New Language Nine

2015 - 2016
Performance-based PhysEd class for grade nine students

I developed an alternative physical education curriculum for classes of grade nine students during a series of weekly meetings which took place in the school gymnasium. By choosing to use a space that mentally and visually defines rules for sports, we were able to reinvent the purposes of the coloured lines on the floor and question the symbolic nature of the space itself.

As the sessions continued, the new rules we made became more complex and resulted in an experimental society of unspoken procedures, rituals, and physical passwords used to cross junctions and develop relationships. Using the theatrical lighting that was rigged for special events and school dances helped us to further transform a common space into an unexplored territory where we mapped our own world and spoke a new language.
