Homage

Performance

You enter the space. It is a vast space, and in the centre stands a table set with dish ware. It is lit from above and surrounded by darkness. Perhaps you find it difficult to see where the room begins or ends.

I enter the space. I emerge slowly from a sliver of darkness created at the apex of two walls. Is it a dream? I approach the table. I wear bed clothes and a night cap. I carefully arrange and rearrange the dish ware. I straighten and align any piece of cutlery, cup, glass, plate, vase, until all components are orderly. I lift the end of the table cloth. No, there is a misaligned dish. I straighten the dish. I return to taking the end of the table cloth, and so on, back and forth, until I finally pull the cloth from under the dishes - an attempt at the physical trick - smashing the dish ware in doing so.

This work is an homage to the filmmaker Roy Andersson.
